We are speaking of the same Ammi Dunham [Ammi being short for Amariah or Amaziah].He appears on the 1790 census in Freeport [as Amaziah Dunham] with his wife and two males under 16 years of age [probably an error for Daniel and Phebe].
Ammi and Bethiah (Hallowell) Dunham had five children recorded in Freeport:
1. Daniel Dunham, b. Oct. 9, 1787.
2. Phebe Dunham, b. Oct. 14, 1789.
3. Bethiah Dunham, b. Jan. 9, 1792.
4. Henry Dunham, b. May 17, 1794.
5. Polly Dunham, b. Aug. 31, 1796.
Ammi and his second wife, Theodate Sawyer, had six children, also recorded in Freeport:
6. James Dunham, b. Sept. 2, 1799.
7. John Dunham, b. Mar. 16, 1802.
8. Ammi Dunham, Jr., b. Feb. 1, 1804.
9. Sarah Dunham, b. Mar. 16, 1809.
10. William Dunham, b. Jan. 15, 1812.
11. Hannah Carter Dunham, b. Aug. 5, 1814.
You may be interested in the following estate schedule filed by Ammi himself in 1820:
"AMMI Dunham, 56, Freeport, private, Lincoln's Co., Brooks' Regt., Mass.Real estate, I have none.Personal estate, one cow, 2 young cattle of one year old, 1 swine and a very few necessary utensils in the house.I have no income and the year before I received my pension I was helped by the kindness and charity of my neighbors.Laborer, not able [due to] frequent sickness and weakness—have not been able to do a days work at a time for twenty seven years.
"Theodota, wife, 44, a feeble woman, now under the care of physicians.John, 19, able to contribute to his support.Ammi, 17, all the time sick—his disorder has settled in his eyes.Sarah, 11, William, 8, Hannah, 6, children not able to support themselves.Continued, $27.26 July 1820."[From Maine Estate Schedules (NEHGR, Jan. 1991: pp. 49-50)]
Of your ancestor Ammi Dunham, Jr., of Lisbon, Maine, I find the following notice in the Lewiston (Me.) Daily Evening Journal of June 24, 1861:
"Capt. Ammi Dunham of Lisbon, died suddenly some time Friday night, while in a apoplectic fit.He left Lisbon Factory for home, with his horse and wagon, about half past nine o'clock, Friday evening. He not arriving home by midnight, his wife became alarmed and sent a son out on the road to search for him.A short distance from his horse, he was found on the ground, insensible and breathing heavily, between the fore and hind wheel of the wagon. The horse was standing still, having been stopped, as is supposed, by the reins' catching in the wheel, after which Capt. D. who had been struck by apoplexy, fell from his seat.Capt. Dunham was conveyed to his house, where he lived till morning, when he expired."
I am interested in knowing your line of descent from Ammi, if you would care to publish it to the forum.
