I just noticed something that might help you; There is an Oscar Dunham in 1850 living in Albany/ 4th ward; page 202 of the Federal Census; perhaps he is related to your Peter. I would think the odds are very good. You might luck out and find that your Peter's roots (in NY state,.. which followed migration from unknown state) are in Albany Co.
There are records of Dunhams in Albany Co. from the 1790s,.. there seemed to be more Dunham families living there then, then there were in 1800 thru 1840,.. in 1850 it picks up again. In the weaker periods of time the prominent names are Josiah, Louis, & John.
In 1790 there was David, William, Samuel, Daniel, Silvanus, Holt, John, Hezekiah, and Isaac.
In 1850, during Oscar's stay, there was:
Josiah, Oscar, Alice, Richard, James, A.T., Martha/ Maratha, Warren, and Bradley.
I have the names Richard, Warren, William, John, and Samuel running through my line but I also have an Ephraims (most commonly repeaded given names for me are Ephraim, Morell, and Samuel.) There's a middle initial "C." that keeps spring up for the men but I am clueless as to what it could be. It must be a name that no one liked. Like Cicero.
Anyhow,.. just thought you should know about this other Oscar since there aren't that many of them. He is the only one I've seen from 1790 to 1850.
