Dungan Family Genealogy Forum

Dear John William,
Why are you so convinced the name Dungan is Irish? In the deep South is the name pronounced as if there was a vowel in the middle, such as Dun-agan? As I mentioned earlier one cousin has traced the name to England and a reference book I researched stated the name was Anglo-Saxon. If it is Anglo-Saxon it would be more English than Irish, if by Irish is meant pure Celtic. Many names thought to be Irish actually were imported from the
Scottish lowlands (Border Scots). The Border Scots were intermingled with the Anglo-Saxons. Therefore Anglo-Saxon names ended up in Ulster and are somtimes confused as Irish. A prime example, the names Reagan and Kennedy are thought to be Irish but are in fact Scottish names which came to Ireland by way of Ulster. There is a distinct difference between Irish names and Scots-Irish names. Scots-Irish simply means Scottish people living in Northern Ireland. They are not true Irish per se, but distant cousins. If you have traced the name Dungan back to Ireland do you know what county the family originates from? If it is indeed an Irish name it must be very close to Dunnigan, Dunagan, and Dunegan, all known to be Irish names. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish from pure Celtic Irish Gaelic and Anglo-Saxon, who in all probability have Celtic roots as well. Look forward to your reply. Mike
