  of 8697

The January/February, 2007, issue of "American Spirit" magazine (D.A.R.)has an article about this house:

"A Kentucky native, Joseph Duncan moved to Illinois in 1818 and settled in Jackson County, where he became a justice of the peace in 1821....he served as a member of the illinois Senate from 1824 to 1826. In 1827, Duncan was elected to the U.S. congress, where he served three consecutive terms."

"Built in 1834, the Governor Joseph Duncan House in Jacksonville, Illinois, served as the official governor's mansion from 1834 to 1838. After the governor's death in 1844, his wife, son and six daughters remained in the home for about 20 years....Governor Duncan's daughter, Julia, and her husband, Judge Edward Kirby, moved into the house. After Julia died in 1896, the home remained under the ownership of Judge Kirby until his death in 1917. In 1920, the local DAR chapter purchased the home from Kirby's widow, Lucinda Kirby."

There is further information in the article, but nothing on the names of the other children.
