The knowledge about the Hempriggs line is pretty well established. That Dunbar line is descended from many different females in that the current Dunbar of Hempriggs we will find YDNA of the Blake’s.
There is another Titled line that descends from a female, Sir David Dunbar of Baldoon. Not only was this common practice for a male to marry into a titled family and assume it’s surname, but there is one instance known within Dunbar. It is William Dunbar, 2nd son of the 5th Earl of Dunbar married Christine, daughter of Walter Corbet of Mackerston. The Corbett DNA Project is fairly new and we are hoping to find a line of Dunbar yDNA amongst those participants.
These events do not disrupt DNA results at all. They only help establish a participant’s true ancestry. The testing company that the Dunbar project uses allows a person to belong in two Surname projects just for this kind of event.Other reasons for having one surname and the results show the yDNA of another surname can be that the surname was chosen, assigned, or purchased.Other possibilities are adoption and out-of wedlock events.
I’m working off a “House of Dunbar” chart that Ally Knox created many years ago and it doesn’t include much of the information you’ve passed along.Since I’m the Administrator of the Dunbar project I appreciate all the information I can obtain in order to help our participants find their ancestors.Ally Knox was the curator of the Dunbar Historical Museum in Dunbar, Scotland and is a descendant of Dunbar himself.
One bit of information that would be very essential to the Project would be the descendants of Capt. Thomas Dunbar & Janet Dunbar of Westfield.Ally’s chart ends at Capt. Thomas & Janet and does not have their descendants.I would like to add Capt. Dunbar’s descendants to this chart if you’d be so kind to pass it along. If there is any chance of a living male Dunbar descendant from the Capt. Dunbar line it would establish the Captains descendancy from Gospatric, in turn, proving your ancestry to Gospatric.
You are probably already aware that Capt. Dunbar descends from another line of the Dunbar’s of Durn dating back to 1595 Sir Ninian Dunbar of Grangehill.Capt. Dunbar descends for Ninian son Sir Robert of Grangehill and the Durn line descends from his son David of Kirkhill.
