There were two Gates families in Pike County about the time of Permelia Gates' birth, William Gates Sr and William Gates Jr. Both are listed on the 1820 census with females in her age range. Evidently, Jr. and Sr. moved away as neither are listed on the 1825 tax list or any later records. On the 1825 tax list, the Gates listed are Jos Gates and Elizabeth Gates. Below is what records I found on Gates in Pike County. If anyone can add anything to the following I would appreciate the information. 1816 Census Pike County, Mississippi William Gates 1 male over 21 3 males under 21 1 female over 21 4 females under 21 1817 Tax Roll Pike County, Mississippi William Gates Topesaw 1820 Census Pike County, Mississippi William Gates Jr. 4 males age 0-10 2 males age 10-16 1 male age 26-45 1 female age 0-10 1 female age 10-16 1 female age 26-45 William Gates Sr. 2 males age 0-10 1 male age 16-26 1 male age 45 and over 1 female age 0-10 2 females age 10-16 1 female age 26-45 1825, 1835, or 1843 Tax Lists of Pike County, Mississippi Neither William Sr. or William Gates Jr. shows up on these tax lists 1825 Tax List Pike County, Mississippi Jos.
