There were two Gates families in Pike County about the time of Permelia Gates' birth, William Gates Sr and William Gates Jr. Both are listed on the 1820 census with females in her age range. Evidently, Jr. and Sr. moved away as neither are listed on the 1825 tax list or any later records. On the 1825 tax list, the Gates listed are Jos Gates and Elizabeth Gates. Below is what records I found on Gates in Pike County. If anyone can add anything to the following I would appreciate the information.

p. 9/30/1880, Gates, Sister Louisa b. Pike County, 5/24/1824, joined Methodist church at Grove Creek, now Port Vincent, LA. In 1856; maiden name Felder, dau of David Felder and Jane McMorris, who came from S. C. in 1830; settled in Livingston Parish, LA near Amite River; joined church under Rev. Beverly Tabpr, married Wm. Jefferson Gates 2/11/1851. He d. in 1855 leaving 2 children.
