Dunaway Gardens, Neunan, Georgia

I am reposting this query that I found in a gardening forum. Maybe some of you folks can be of help to this lady!

Hi everyone, I am searching for any info I can get on Dunaway Gardens in Newnan, Georgia. It was/is located on Hwy 70/Roscoe Rd., it was at it's peak in the 1940's and popular for it's 7 various garden areas. It was established by the highest paid actress of the 1920's Hettie Jane Dunaway who married William P. Sewell, of Newnan,Georgia.

This place is unbelievably overgrown with ivy, kudzu and anything else that would grow prolificly when neglected for 30 some odd years. I am trying to locate more information or photos of the gardens during the time it was popular.

If you know of any parents or grandparents that may have visited I would love to communicate with you to learn more. We are currently undergoing a renovation of the gardens and it will be about a 2 year project.

Each weekend during the work progress mething new is uncovered. I can't begin to estimate how much rock was brought in for this. I do know that men were paid 50 cent a day to bring a wagon or truck load of flat granite and place it in the structures of the pool, brooks, falls, ponds, gazebos, just on and on...that run throughout the gardens.

The gardens were comprised of 7 various garden areas along a stone footpath. (Hanging, Rock, Sunken, "little Italy", wedding tree, honeymoon cottages, outdoor amphitheatre including an area for summer cocktails) Even in it's overgrown state all of the stone and overgrown trees and greenery are still impressive. I could just live there and be happy(except for the ticks).

If anyone could please make suggestions as to where I might find info on historic gardens in Georgia I would appreciate it so much. The property is registered with the National Registry of Historical Properties.

I have exhausted the library (one article), local newspapers, magazines with no luck. We
want to establish a website to display the history and ongoing renovation until Dunaway Gardens has been restored to it's former glory.

We also will give credit on the site to anyone that could give us even a tidbit of info, this is a very exciting project for us.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you can help.
