DUNAWAY, Alexander - VA - b. Abt. 1871
I've got a couple of questions about Alexander Dunaway, b. Abt. 1871 in Virginia, son of Thomas (b. 1821) and Mary (Perkins) Dunaway.
#1 Does anyone know Alexander's middle (or maybe its his first) name? He shows up in various places with a variety of names and initials. My Father's birth certificate shows Elec. V.(?), and I've seen Elis S., Aliser. N.(?), and Alexander (among others). These names are all from the same person that married Bell (Belle) V. Trent Bet. 1892 - April 1893.
#2 Does anyone know Alexander's whereabouts in 1900? I've searched every page of Halifax County, Virginia and Staunton County, Virginia and didn't find a trace of him. Of course I need stronger glasses now HA HA HA.
#3 Alexander (Elis S.) Dunaway was listed as the head of household in the census of 1910 in Staunton Magisterial District, Halifax County, Virginia. He was shown as the head of HH# 210, age 39 and a farmer working to own account; he rented the farm. He had been married for 3 years. He could speak English and read and write (which is strange because he could not read or write at other times). Listed with him were his wife Belle, age 18; and daughter (--?--), age 15, either from a previous marriage or illegitimate. Bell indicated that she had no living or dead children; plus she would have had to be 3-years old when the child was born.
The questions are: What is the daughter's name? Who was her mother? Did Alexander have a previous wife? I've seen the daughter's name suggested as Lottie, but the first letter looks like a J (comparing it to other letters written by the same census taker). The name has 6 or possibly 7 letters in it. The second letter could be an E, but I can't rule out the possibility of it being and I or O. The middle letters appear to be TT, LT, or TL. And the last one or two letters could be most anything. So-o-o, who is this person and who was her mother?
***sigh*** Sometimes we think we are on the right path and then stuff like this crops up. Any help at all would be appreciated. At least I'd be able to move on to something else, like where was Thomas and Mary Dunaway in 1850 -- but thats another question for a later time HA HA HA.
