What can you tell me about Thomas C. Dula (Tom Doooley)? I have been researching the folk song "Tom Dooley" and as I understand, Thomac C. Dula (Dooley) was a Civil War veteran who returned to Wilkes County, NC after the war. Dula & Laura Foster were having an affair & Dula became involved with another woman, Anne Melton and appeared for a time to be courting both of them. Dula then contacted a venerial disease, which he believed he contacted from Laura Foster, and passed it on to Anne Melton. Dula swore revenge & belief is that Anne Melton became accomplace in the murde, although never convicted. Dula's trial was held in an adjoining county because of strong feelings in Wilkes County.
