1. I am a 5th generation grandson of Captain William Dula. Alfred Dula was my great grandfather. I have been called "Dooley", "Duley", and "Doolie" as much or more than my real name. I think maybe Appalachia folk like the sound of "e" better than "a." Perhaps Du La sounds too uppity. 2. I have records of land purchased by Captain William Dula. As an example I will use three of these. On December 13, 1791 Captain Dula purchased a tract of 400 acres, each side of the Yadkin River, Wilkes County, North Carolina from Russell Jones, Franklin County, Georgia. (Jones had moved to Georgia from the Yadkin Valley.) On December 13, 1791, Captain Dula purchased 80 acres, South side of the Yadkin River from Russell Jones, Franklin County Georgia. On December 20, 1791 Captain "Dooley" purchased 100 acres South side of the Yadkin River from Russell Jones, Franklin County Georgia. The December 20th spelling of the name indicates that two different clerks did the transactions and as often happens, no one caught it at the time. Incidentially, in 1819 Captain Dula outbid General William Lenoir for a tract of land in Elkville. The price was $3,000.00. Quite a lot of money for that day and time. 3. A late cousin of mine, James B. Dula, claimed one branch of the family changed their name to Dooley after moving to Georgia. Maybe they just decided to quite fighting an uphill battle. 4. Somewhere I saw evidence one branch of the family changed their name from Dula to Dooley after moving to Georgia. Maybe they just decided to quit fighting an uphill battle. 5. The death of Laura Foster in May of 1866 gave birth to many versions of "Bow down your head "Tom Dooley", "Duley", "Doolie", "Dulie." Some sessions referred to Laura Foster as "Laurie Foster," Once again "Dooley" probably had a better ring than "Dula." The Kingston Trio won a Grammy for its revival of "Tom Dooley" in 1958. The popularity of the song in this area further contributed to substituting the "e" over the "a".
