I doubt that Harriet and James Alfred Dula were legally married due to the laws of the land at that time but I understand they were very much in love and James wanted to be sure this family was taken care of.I understand that James youngest son by Elizabeth had objected to his father's providing for Harriet and her children so was left out of his first will.Later he was put back in with the stipulation that anyone who objected or challenged the will would receive nothing.Since Harriet carried the last name of Harshaw, I am sure that her life was terrible on the Harshaw plantation.Just as the Dula's were good to their slaves Mr. Harshaw was cruel and terrible. There are 2 stories, one from my father (now almost 98 and one from a cousin)Have been in contact with Quartense, a descendant of Harriet. She said that Harriet was 1/2 Cherokee, and sent a picture of her.Would be very interested in additional info you may have.Sharon
