Hello Sarah,
Found your message board re: Dula family.I am Chairman of the McDowell Co. Historic Preservation Commission, and am currently conducting a survey of all the oldhomes in McDowell Co.One that I visited today in the Old Fort community in western McDowell was supposedly built by a man named "Squire" Dula -- a Caldwell Co. plantation owner from near Lenoir(?)I was told by the current home owners that the house was built ca. 1842 by Mr. Dula's slaves, that he lived on this property until his death, and that he acquired massive landholdings in this area.I was also told by another local resident whose grandparents later owned the property that Mr. Dula is buried at a nearby cemetery.Upon checking I found that the Dula buried there is the Aurelius Dula mentioned in your message; however, he was born in 1843.Obviously he could not have been the person who built this home (IF it was built in 1842 or therabouts). My questions for you: 1) Do you know what "Squire" Dula's given name was?2) Did he indeed relocate to McDowell Co.?3)Could "A.J" Dula have been the son of this man? Would truly appreciate any help you could give me.Thank you.
