You make an excellent point regarding descent from royalty. A recent article from Science --
Genghis Khan: most prolific man in history? (Science)
By Thorgeir Blund
A recent study suggests Genghis Khan's direct patrilineal descendants today constitute ~8% of men in a large area of Asia (~0.5% of the world population).
Similarly, it has been argued that everyone of European descent alive today descends from Charlemagne, which makes it hard to get very excited about this ancestry.
I love genealogy because it is a wonderful puzzle, and also because it allows me to acknowledge the existence of people whose lives would otherwise be forgotten. Charlemagne can take care of himself-- Joseph Dukes of Orangeburg deserves a little attention.
