I've done a good bit of research on the history and distribution of the Duke family of southernEngland. The family seems to have been Norman (originally Duc), and to have appeared first in London and Suffolk, with a brief foray into Dorset. Later branches in southeastern England include Duke families (often with traceable relationships to one another) in Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Oxfordshire, Essex, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertford, and Surrey. By the 1300's the family is also found in southwestern England, primarily in Wiltshire and Devonshire. One Duke family in Kent seems to have it's own early origins, while another is derived from the Devonshire Duke family.
