Mary Duke, wife of Benjamin Ward of Virginia
Mary Duke is said to have been the second wife of Benjamin Ward (born September 18, 1717), of Lunenburg County, Virginia. The name of his first wife is not known, but he and his first wife had an only son, Daniel Ward (1739-1826) of Franklin County, Virginia.Benjamin Ward had a number of children by his second wife, Mary Duke.
Dr. William Ward was a son of Benjamin and Mary (Duke) Ward.He settled in Tennessee and was said to be very rich and well-educated.Dr. Ward had no children and his widow gave a journal he kept to his nephew, Peter Markham. The journal was passed down in the Markham family and was lost by fire around the turn of the century. Some of the information it is said to have contained was passed down by word of mouth over the years.I would like to verify information it is said to have contained.
The journal kept by Dr. Ward included information regarding his slaves and patients as well as remedies for various ailments. He also wrote down an account of his life including information about his family, in which he had great pride. His Mother, born Mary Duke, was said to be the daughter of James and Mary (Byrd) Duke and was a niece of William Byrd II of Westover, after whom Dr. Ward was said to be named. The Wards honored the Duke and Byrd connection by the use of the names William, Mary, James, and Duke in the family.
I find the Byrd and Duke families residing in Charles City County and James City County, Virginia. The Wards resided in Henrico County which lies adjacent to Charles City County. The Ward family later moved into Cumberland County, Virginia and further south into Lunenburg County.
I am looking for proof of the Byrd-Duke-Ward connection.Dr. William Ward's journal has been lost for many years and the records of many of the counties involved were destroyed during the Civil War.The family record of Richard Ward (1692-1762), the father of Benjamin Ward (born September 18, 1717), does not give the name or identity of either Benjamin's first or second wives. Therefore, I would appreciate any assistance in verifying the claims of descendants as to what was reportedly written by Dr. William Ward about his Mother's ancestry.
