John,
I am also an Alabama Duggar (now living in Virginia) and I have also been puzzled by this name mutation. After talking with many Duggers and Duggars in several states, I think probably the changes occurred in several branches independently, at different times, and usually by clerical error. Dugger is the predominant and presumably original spelling and in either case most of us have common ancestors in Daniel Dugger (b. 1690) and Mary Scarborough (b. 1695) in Surrey Co., VA.
