Duffy Family Genealogy Forum

Dear Bonnie, Nice to meet you. You said you bought the book to glean info on the Duffs but found the Duffs and Duffies were NOT related. I have a 1975 tartan map/book (It is in fold out form like a map). It is THE TARTAN MAP by John Menzies and it shows a map of Scotland with all the clan names printed on the regions corresponding to their areas of influence at the beginning of the 17th century. The entire map is bordered with each clan's tartan, in color, of course. Family names are given in one column with the corresponding clan & tartan names in another column. Now to my point; the Duff name (as well as Fife, Fyfe, MacDuff, Spence, Spens, and Wemyss) holds the MacDuff clan and tartan. The Macfie clan and tartan is held by these families: Duffie, Duffy, MacDuffie, Macfee, Macfie, MacGuffie, and Machaffie. It is the " fie" in Duffie that is the tip off. This kind of map would be valuable to genealogists because it shows the areas of influence for particular families at a given time period. The map I have does not show all the possible family names because space did not permit it. Omission of a name from the map does not mean a family was landless. However, it does suggest the Bartholomew Clan Map "Scotland of Old" for very detailed information of the areas of 330 different Highland Clans and Lowland families. It also contains 174 clan crests with coats of arms of their chiefs. I hope others will find this tidbit informative. It would seem naturally logical to think Duffie/Duffy is part of the MacDuff clan rather than the Macfies. I have some other interesting information on the Duffs which I got from a patronymic reference book 25 years ago. I have only recently renewed my interest in the family history. I expect a visit from my father soon and I hope to learn about my more recent relatives, Duffs from Kentucky. Sincerely, Tammy.
