I canít tell you how thrilled I am to have heard from you and to get confirmation on what I had suspected. I want to know more about the family - the Freemans, the Duffeys, and the Boulwares. I have information Iíd love to share with you as well. I live in Columbia, SC. How can I get in touch with you? Are you a member of Iím working with a Duffey descendant, who happens to live in Texas - you mentioned some of the family moving out there, and weíve been wrestling with this Boulware/Duffey connection for a long time. Itís so nice to finally find an answer. He has found Elizabeth living with two black (or Indian) women on one of the census records as you pointed out, but I donít know which one yet. Was Elizabeth a full-blooded Cherokee as my grandma told me or was she of mixed blood? I know the Creek also lived in that area.

I have a copy of the obituary for my gr grandma Margaret Freeman Jones that appeared in the Fairfax paper on 20 Feb 1931, 2 days after her death. It lists her living siblings as Mrs. Ada Boon of Dadeville, AL (Iím also descended from the Boon family), Mrs. Anna Lifsey (Litsey/Lightsey) of Pisgah, AL, Mr. A.W. (Albett or Albert W.) Freeman of Childersburg, AL, and Mr. Eldridge Freeman of Dadeville, AL. My uncle who lives in Columbus, GA, told that the Lightseys owned a car dealership in Columbus. He thought they were the same Lightseys as Anna Freeman married into.

We believe that Elizabeth Duffey was the daughter of William Jefferson Duffey (1786 Ė 1869) and Eleanor LANEY (1785 Ė 1842). One of the census records shows her and Marion living with Samuel David Duffey, b Apr 1826 in Mecklenburg, NC to William Jefferson and Eleanor Laney Duffey, and his wife Elizabeth B. Smith Duffey, b Aug 1872 in GA. This would have been her brother, which makes sense. An Elizabeth Catherine Duffey was listed as born in 1821 in NC and d 2 Oct 1900. I can find no marriage listing for her or a family tree showing her as having been married. Her grandparents would have been John Nelson Duffey (1752 Ė 1840) and Margaret Pharr (1754 Ė 1834).

Census records for Tallapoosa Co, AL:
1850 - Elizabeth is listed as being born about 1826 and lives with brother David Samuel Duffey.
1860 - Elizabeth is listed as being born about 1830 and lives with daughter Margaret J. Freeman
1866 - Fanney Boulware is listed as living alone and being over age 20. Next on the list is an Elizabeth Boulware listed as having 1 male 10-20 and 1 female over 20 in her household. Next on the list is Henry Freeman with 3 males under 10, 1 male over 20, and 1 female over 20.
1870 - An Eliza Duffey born about 1820 lives next door to a John Duffey and family.
1870 - A Polley Duffey lives with Fanney and Frank Bolware.

I canít find a cemetery listing for her but would think that Eagle Creek is a logical place for her burial. Various Duffey family trees list Elizabeth Katherine Duffeyís birth as 1821 in NC and 2 Oct 1900 as her death.

Let me know if you think Iím on the right track with her parentage. Deborah
