Dudenhoeffer?

Paul, did your family ever talk about a name change upon immigration to the USA? It is well ingrained family lore that the first of our Dudens who came to America dropped the "hoeffer" or similar suffix from Dudenhoeffer. However, so far I have not found any written confirmation. I do see Dudenhoeffer and variants in directories, but Duden has stood alone in Germany for sometime as well as is shown by the dictionary and publishing house Duden family. Mark
