Jasper and Holland Drury are Brothers

Several researchers have asked about the heritage of Holland or Jasper Drury of Ohio. It is likely Jasper and Holland, as well as Walter and Daniel Drury are all brothers, the children of Daniel Drury (b. 1780 VT) and Lucy Marshall, the grandchildren of Ebenezer Drury and his second wife Thankful Scott, and the great-grandsons of Daniel Drury and Sarah Flagg.

The first clue is from a family bible held by Holland Drury?s descendants that shows the names of Daniel and Lucy (Marshall) Drury. They were married in 1801 in Milton, VT, while Holland was born in 1823 in Highgate Falls, VT. Could he be their son? The first hint is in Holland?s children?s names: Lucy Emily, William Marshall, Thomas Milton, Colesta Ann and Mylizza Jane (see post #1179). The first two derive from their grandmother?s name. Thomas Milton reflects where Holland?s parents were married. How did they meet? Daniel is on the 1800 VT census for Andover, Windsor Co, VT. However, his half-brother Abel, son of Ebenezer and Hannah Keyes, is already further north in Milton. Colesta Ann is likely a bad spelling of Calista Ann. Jasper Drury?s oldest son Albert (Elbert) married Calista Peck in Seneca Co, OH on 5MAR1850. The same day Jane Peck (relationship not known) married Elijah Brooks. Children were often named after close relatives wives, and Colesta Ann was not born until after 1850. Indeed, Holland?s own name, some times written Halen, may reflect his cousin Abel jr?s marriage to Caroline Halenbeck (or Hollenbeck) also in 1823 in Highgate.

If Daniel and Lucy married in 1801 and Holland was born in 1823, where are all the other children? Jasper was supposedly born between 1805 and 1809, based on the birth date of his wife, Louisa (Lavisy) Dean, in 1809. A Jasper descendant notes that he had a brother Walter, on whom we have found nothing. Finally, the 1870 VT census finds a Daniel in Weathersfield, Winsor Co., age 69, hence born about 1811. The only Daniels in the Drury line are Daniel who married Lucy Marshall and his grandfather. As Daniel was in Winsor Co in 1800, this could be his offspring.
Reinforcing the view that Holland and Daniel are related is the fact they both were apparently in Highgate Falls. We know Holland was born there. The second clue comes from the reminiscences in 1940 of Alice Hannah Wool born 1863, (see post #1081) who names the children of Abel Drury (the half-brother from Milton) and Sarah Keith now in Highgate Falls. Unfortunately, Alice Wool?s list differs slightly from a contemporaneous list from Lumas Meigs, husband of Abel?s third daughter, Azubah. Alice Wool identifies twelve children, including Daniel, who does not appear on the Meigs list. Daniel born in 1811, could not be Abel?s child, as he had children born in NOV1810 and SEP1812. Other errors in Ms. Wool?s letter suggest she has grouped all the Drurys still living in Highgate after her birth. On her list, she misses Abel?s offspring Azubah and Philo, who had both moved away far earlier. Nor does not mention another family with Holland, Jasper or Walter as by 1863 they are long gone to Ohio. Daniel, however, is the son who stayed behind as seen in the 1870 census.

Why only four boys in 22 years? Perhaps there were more children. However, we note that a Darrel Drury (likely Daniel as there were no Darrels back then) was warned out of Acton, Windham, VT 16JAN1809. Daniel was warned out of Pittsford, Rutland Co, VT 5APR1813. His younger brother Needham was warned out 29MAY1813. Warning out occurred frequently when towns feared that families might become a burden on the town due to crop failure or joblessness. Perhaps these warnings out are why Daniel had few children and ultimately sought refuge with his older brother in Highgate and also why his children moved west for better opportunities.

I had earlier suspected that Jasper Drury was related to Elihu and John Drury, sons of Ebenezer Drury and his second wife Jane Hudson. All are connected with Weathersfield, VT. Indeed, these men would be Daniel?s first cousins. They moved west through NY and Ohio with families ending up in Michigan.

Daniel would also have been a first cousin of Abraham Drury, who was in Washington Co, Oh early. Separate research has identified as many as eight member of this family in Ohio.

It is possible Jasper, Walter and Holland moved together through NY and Ohio. A likely starting point is Troy, NY as the Deans and Pecks both had connections there.
