Gavin Drummond was in fact married to Mary Layton, but this was in the early 1690's, not 1680. Having left Scotland in 1684, he arrived in the province of East New Jersey, via the Capes of Virginia, to where the ship Shield had been blown off course because of a nearly disastrous storm. Six months after his arrival, Gavin returned to Edinburgh (March of 1685), most likely to report to the Earl of Perth on the state of affairs in the province, where the Earl had a large proprietary interest. Gavin's family in Scotland was intimately involved with that of the Earl. Shortly after this visit, Gavin returned to New Jersey for good, and began tending to the development and agrandizement of his properties, as well as to the emergence of his own family, this latter including his marriage to Mary Layton. She was the daughter of William Layton and wife Violet. To my knowledge there is no record of Gavin's and Mary's marriage; however there are numerous historical references to the couple.
As a descendant of Gavin Drummond, I am interested in your Layton connection, and in the coming together of these two colonial families.
