Hello, I am Peter Dron, one of about four people of that name, to my knowledge, in the world. The Dron whose monument, actually a mausoleum, you saw in a cemetery in Southend was my grandfather, Sir Thomas Middleton Dron, who became Senior Sheriff of the City of London in 1924, and then died, aged only 44, of pneumonia (people did in those days). His widow, Lady Dron, lived in Southend until her death towards the end of the War, having spent all the money my grandfather had left her (a lot!). My grandparents were in that mausoleum, embalmed, until my father, TJ Dron (1910-1983) and uncle, CF Dron, worried about vandalism, had them cremated some time in the 1970s. I saw the mausoleum myself after that,in about 1977, when visiting the adjacent print works.
I also once saw Dron Buildings, which was named after my grandfather, but do not know where it was or if it still stands. My grandfather was co-founder of Dron & Wright, the firm of surveyors, and my father became senior partner of it.
I can trace my branch of the Drons back to John Dron, a coal merchant and spirit dealer (baptised 10/1/1979), and perhaps as far back as Alexander Dron of Perth, born in the first half of the 16th century.
There is a Dron in War & Peace, a village elder, nicknamed Dronushka. He is teetotal and renowned for not being lazy, so he was obviously not a close relation.

Peter Dron
