Drayton Family Genealogy Forum

My step-daughter married a descendent of these Draytons, so I am researching this also (just started this summer.) According to a book we have on Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, this family is descended from Aubrey de Vere who was Great Chamberlain to King Henry I. He came to England with William the Conqueror and was given Drayton House in Northampton in 1066. In the 13th century, the family dropped de Vere and assumed the name of Drayton. Also according to the book, Thomas Drayton I moved from England to the Barbados about mid-1600. His death is placed as 1717. His son, Thomas Drayton II (b. 1708, Eng., d. 1760) moved with his father to the Barbados, then about 1671 he moved to what was then called Charles Towne. He married Ann Fox, daughter of Stephen and Phyllis Fox, who had also moved to Charles Towned about 1670. Stephen Fox was the first owner of Magnolia Plantation on the Ashley River. When Stephen Fox died, Thomas Drayton II inherited Magnolia Plantation from his father-in-law. His son, Thomas Drayton III(b. 1732)was the next owner of Magnolia Plantation. I know that the present owner of Magnolia Plantation (grandfather of my son-in-law) is a direct descendent, but I am still working on the in-between generations--things get a little snarled for me in the late 1800s. There is more information in the book. Some information is also on the web at http://www.magnoliaplantation.com/history.htm I would be happy to share information that I have or get with you.
