Willam Draper, Thomas Draper, Henry County, VA

I believe that William Draper Sr.Mar 28 1760 Amelia Co,Va IS NOT the father of Thomas Jefferson Draper, Sr. I am a descendent of Thomas's younger brother, Elkanah, born 5/20/1827.

According to the will of William Draper in 1854, he has five living children plus one (Elizabeth Stone Draper) who became an adult before passing away. Those six children are: Thomas J., Elizabeth, Ruth, Frances, John, and Elkanah B. He also mentions his wife, Lucy. A William Draper married Lucy Meredith on September 30, 1805 in Henry County.

The 1850 Henry county census shows William, age 65, born South (or North, I'll get back to this later) Carolina, with Lucy, age 62. With them are four children with the last name stone. I presume that these are their grandchildren, the children of Elizabeth Stone Draper, and their father must have died or left them.

The 1860 Henry county census shows William, age 74, and Lucy, age 72. Three houses down from them are Thomas and Nancy Draper, age 51, with their family. This is Thomas Jefferson Draper, Sr.

Also, the 1820 Henry county census has William as the head of house with one son aged 10-15 (Thomas), and four daughters under the age of 10. I presume that one of them died in childhood.

So what does this mean? It means that a different William Draper is our common ancestor, with Lucy Meredith as his wife. I have done a moderate amount of research into the background of William and Lucy, and so far have little to show for it. I only have Lucy's father's name, June, or Juner.

Back to William being born in South Carolina. The 1850 and 1860 census are the only two he is on that show place of birth. The 1860 census is smudged, and difficult to read. The 1850 census is not, and I read his birthplace as "S.C.", South Carolina. Others, however, seem to think it reads "N.C.", North Carolina. I'm pretty confident that it is South Carolina, and through my research I found a large Draper population in South Carolina at that time, but no definitive links between our Wiliam and anyone there. I'll post something if I find anything

If anyone has any comments or questions, or sees an error in my research, please let me know. Thanks.

Mike Cassidy
