Hi Gerry. I think you've combined two brothers. My great grandfather was Walter Hugh Drane and his brother was William Winfrey Drane. Both were children of William P. Drane and Martha Hughes (Winfrey) Drane. Both were farmers and doctors in GA and served in the CSA. Here’s what I have about them. (I don’t have as much about William because he wasn’t a direct ancestor of mine.)

Walter Hugh Drane was born 01/08/1832 in Prattsburg, GA. Supposedly, he graduated from Belleview Hospital in New York and became specialist in gynecology and obstetrics. On 10/21/1858 he married Mary Frances Spencer of Farmville, VA. He farmed and had a medical practice in Prattsburg, GA. Then on 3/4/1862 he enlisted as a private in Company E, 45th Regiment (Taylor Volunteers), GA Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA. On 6/20/1862 he took on the duties of an Assistant Surgeon, and he was assigned Assistant Surgeon rank the next day. His company then participated in the Seven Days Battles, Cedar Run, Second Manassas, Antietam (Sharpsburg), and First Fredericksburg. In January, 1863 he transferred into the 27th Regiment and he passed his examination for Surgeon. Then the Chancellorsville battle happened.

On 6/12/1863 he was appointed Surgeon of the 27th. Regiment (there may have been others.) His unit then participated next in the battles at Olustee , FL, and Drewry's Bluff, VA, and served on the Petersburg Line. At Petersburg they went through battles at Second Cold Harbor, The Crater, Globe Tavern, and Chaffin’s Farm. His unit went through many smaller subsiquant battles, ending at Bentonville, NC. He was a Durham Station, NC, on 4/26/1865, when General Joe Johnston surrendered to Sherman. He was paroled 5/1/1865 at Greensboro, NC.

He returned to GA virtually blind in one eye and did not resume his medical practice. In 1866 he and his wife moved to Batesville, MS, where his father in law had moved in 1860. There he became a cotton farmer, had three children, and died 03/28/1905.

His first son was William Winfrey Drane, named after his brother, but he lived just nine days.

The brother, William Winfrey Drane, was born 09/24/1830 in Columbia Co, GA. He married Eugenia A. Nesbitt Brown on 06/16/1859 in Marion Co, GA. He was also a doctor and farmer. On 5/6/1862 he enlisted as a private in Company G, 59th Regiment, GA Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to Full Captain of Company H on 6/15/1862. His unit’s history was similar to Walter’s, but also included significant action at Gettysburg. “He was wounded 3 times at Gettysburg, but did not leave the field.” He resigned his commission at Marion County, GA on 2/15/1865 (having been elected Judge, Inferior Court.) William died on 02/07/1910 at Friendship, GA.

I have much more info on the descendants of Walter, very little more on William. I have more on their ancestry, but I think it’s pretty well known on the net. Please let me know if more is of interest.

- Dorsey
