Richard Drakeford's will dated 13 Mar. 1740, Truro Parish, Pr. Wm. Co., VA names wife, Anne, daughters, Elizabeth and Mary and son John. Witnesses are Chas. Green, Gerrard Tramel, John Grey and Anne Gist/Guess. Daughter Elizabeth is believed to have married the witness, John Grey. Anne (Simpson) Gist is the wife of Joseph Guess/Gist and the Mother of a John Gist. John Gist served with William Payne and Richard Osborn in doing the first inventory of the estate. Richard Drakeford had posted security for the estate of Anne Guess's husband, Joseph Guess in 1739. According to other documents the Drakeford and Guess/Gist families were neighbors to each other. The above John Gist was born about 1722 and the Richard Drakeford's daughter, Mary probably was in her late teens early twenties at the death of her father. I have seen nothing more concerning this Mary. However due to the close association of the Drakeford and Guess/Gist families, the ages of John Guess/Gist and Mary Drakeford (early 20's, therefore both of marrying age in the early 1740s) and the fact that later indentures give the name of John Guess/Gist's wife as "Mary" I believe she could have well been the daughter Mary, named in the will of Richard Drakeford. Looking for any proof that will either confirm or refute this idea. lrlewisjr.
