Commodore P. (Perry?) DRACE & Laura F. TEMPLIN, Highland County, OH, ca 1848-80

Seeking parents and family of Laura F. TEMPLIN who seems to have married (circa 1869-70) Commodore P. (Perry?) DRAIS ( b ca 1848--d ca 1879-80). The problem lies in determining just WHICH Laura F. TEMPLIN (there were several) married Commodore P. DRAIS in Highland County, circa 1869-70. [DRAIS, DRAISE, DRAICE, and DRACE are common variants of the same name.] This story begins with the birth of a child:

According to Genevieve Breakfield, in her reference volume, Highland County Births, Published by the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society, Hillsboro, OH 45133, 1992, Volume 1, Page 116, a baby girl, “Luettia DRAIS” was born on 22 September 1870 in Dodson Township, Highland County, Ohio." She was the daughter of “Commodore P. DRAIS and Laura F. TEMPLIN.” Everything that follows flows from the record of this birth.

The career of this child's father, Commodore P. DRAIS, can be traced through the US Census returns for Highland County, OH, in 1850, 1860, and 1870, as follows:

In the 18 August 1850 US Census for Dodson Township, Highland County, Ohio:
DRACE, Isaac B., 33 M, Farmer, born in KY
DRACE, Mary E., 11 F, b OH
DRACE, Rebecca J., 9 F, OH
DRACE, Daniel, 8 M, OH
DRACE, Lemuel, 6 M, OH
DRACE, Samantha, 5 F, OH
DRACE, Commodore P. (Perry?), 2 Male, born in OH

In the 19 July 1860 US Census for Willettsville P.O., Union Township, Highland County, Ohio:
DRACE, Isaac B., 44 M, Farmer, $2800/Real Estate, b in Ohio
DRACE, Hannah, 49 F, b OH
DRACE, Mary, 20 F, OH
DRACE, Rebecca, 19 F, OH
DRACE, Daniel, 17 M, OH
DRACE, Lemuel, 15 M, OH
DRACE, Samantha, 14 F, OH
DRACE, Commodore, 12 Male, born in OH
DRACE, Judson, 8 M, OH

In the 30 June 1870 US Census for Hillsborough, Union Township, Highland Co., OH:
DRAICE, Isaac B., WM 53, Farmer, $5000 Real Estate/$1500 Personal Estate, born in OH
DRAICE, Hannah, WF 60, Keeping House, b in KY
DRAICE, Daniel, WM 28, b in VA
DRAICE, Barney, WM 23, Farm Laborer, $250 Personal Estate, OH [Could this be Perry?]
DRAICE, Laura, WF 21, Assistant House Keeper, OH [This is probably Perry’s wife.]
DRAICE, Bartley, WM 18, OH [Could this be Judson B. DRAICE?]
[If “Barney” is really Commodore Perry Drais, then it looks as if the younger couple, Commodore Perry Drais & Laura (nee Templin) Drais, are living on the farm of Perry’s parents. Isaac and Hannah DRAIS did not have a daughter named Laura, and this Laura is most likely their daughter in law, listed as "Assistant Housekeeper." The fact that she is listed as Laura DRAICE instead of Laura TEMPLIN suggests that she and Commodore P. DRAIS were married, circa 1869. Is there, perhaps, a record of this marriage in Highland County?]

In the 7 June 1880 US Census for Hillsborough, Union Township, Highland Co., OH:
DRAIS, Isaac B., WM 63, Head, Married, Farmer, KY TN WV
DRAIS, Elizabeth, WF 50, Wife, Mar, Keeping House, 3xPA
DRAIS, David, WM 35, Son, Single, At Home, OH KY VA
DRAIS, Judson B., WM 24, Son, S, At Home, OH KY VA
McClelland, John, WM 23, Step-Son, S, Laborer, OH PA TN,
[By the time of the 7 June 1880 US Census in Ohio, Perry & Laura DRAIS, and their children, are no longer living on the Highland County farm of Isaac & Hannah DRAIS, and have probably gone west, into Nevada.]

In the 30 October 1880 US Census for Winnemucca, Humboldt County, Nevada:
DRACE, Lauria, WF 30, (Head), Widowed, Keeping House, OH OH IN,
DRACE, Loretta, WF 10, Daughter, At Home, OH OH OH,
DRACE, Wm., WM 2, Son, NV OH OH,
BRADLEY, M.K., WM 23, Miner, 3xIreland
[It is evident from the 1880 US Census that Commodore P. (Perry?) Drais has died, because Laura Drais (OH IN IN) is now listed as a Widow. The ages and OH origins of Laura/Lauria and Loretta closely match the wife and daughter of Perry Drais, now deceased, and, interestingly, with them is an additional child, William Perry Drais, who was born in Nevada circa 1878. This suggests that Commodore P. (Perry?) DRAIS died in Nevada, ca 1877-79.]

Of some interest (and confirming our conclusion that the Nevada Drais family is the same as the Ohio Drais family) is the fact that the older brother of Commodore P. Drais, Lemuel K. Drais, also has moved from the Highland County OH farm of his parents to Winnemucca, Humboldt County, Nevada, and was there also enumerated in the 22 October 1880 US Census:

In the 8 July 1870 US Census for Lynchburg Village, Dodson Township, Highland Co., OH:
DRAISE, Lemuel, WM 25, Blacksmith, Real Estate $600/$200 Personal, born in OH
DRAISE, Roccelana, WF 22, Keeping House, b OH
DRAISE, Eliza, WF 3, At Home, b OH

In the 22 October 1880 US Census for Winnemucca, Humboldt County, Nevada:
Lemuell Drace, WM 36, Married, Blacksmith, OH KY VA
Rosalena Drace, WF 30, Keeping House, 3xOH
Jessie Drace, WF 12, Daughter, 3xOH
Louelle Drace, WF 9, Daughter, 3xOH
Frank Drace 7, WM 7, Son, 3xOH

So far, so good (maybe). Our analysis shows that Laura F. TEMPLIN and Commodore P. DRAIS were the parents of a daughter, Loretta or Luettia DRAIS, born on 22 September 1870 in Dodson Township, Highland County, roughly three months after the 30 June 1870 US Census enumerated her living on the farm of Perry's parents, Isaac & Hannah DRAIS in Hillsborough, Union Township, Highland Co., OH. There is a slight inconsistency between Dodson Township and Union Township that I cannot explain.

However, after the 1880 US Census, Laura F. (nee Templin) DRAIS, disappears from the records. Her brother in law, the Civil War Veteran and Blacksmith, Lemuel Drais and his family moved on down from Nevada to Florence, Pinal County, Arizona, where they were enumerated in the 1 June 1900 US Census. William Perry Drais, the son of Perry & Laura who was born in Nevada in 1878, moved on up to Boise, Ada County, Idaho, where he was enumerated in the 21 June 1900 US Census. His sister also seems to have moved up to Idaho, for on 28 December 1889 "Luettia" DRACE was married to Charles H. BROWN in Boise, Ada County, Idaho. It is quite possible that the mother of these two children, Laura or Lauria (nee Templin) DRAIS also moved from Nevada to Boise, Idaho, and died somewhere along the way.

However, we still have the problem of identifying just "which" Laura F. Templin married Commodore P. DRAIS and was the mother of these children. And here is where the problem arises, for there apparently were several Laura Templins (at least four candidate Lauras, only three of whom were Templins) in the Highland County, Ohio, area.

A. The US Census return for 1850 lists a "Laura F. TEMPLIN" as having been born circa 1849 and being the daughter of a blacksmith named William S. TEMPLIN & his wife Amelia, of Clark Township in Clinton Co., OH. However, this child, Laura F. TEMPLIN, is unfortunately NOT again listed with this family in the 1860, 1870, 1880 Census in Clinton County, OH. The name is correct and the birthdate is correct, but as she disappears after the 1850 Census, she may well have died and thus she is not a strong candidate.

B. The US Census for 24 September 1850 in Deerfield Township, Ross County, OH, also lists "Lawri J. TEMPLIN" as the newborn (five months old) daughter of James TEMPLIN Jr. (10 Oct 1791/Mason Co. KY -- 10 July 1876/Ross Co OH) and his second wife, Abigail STRAIN (1809-1851). In the 1860 Census for Deerfield/Ross Co OH, the spelling of "Lawri J. Templin" has been corrected to "Laura F. TEMPLIN," age "10," and in the 1870 Census for Deerfield/Ross Co. OH, it is "Laura TEMPLIN." However, this Laura who is in Ross County in the 1870 Census in Ross Co OH cannot be the same person as the Laura DRAICE who in 1870 is living with the family of Isaac & Hannah DRAICE and her husband Commodore P. DRAICE over in Highland Co OH; furthermore, this Ross Co OH Laura later is identified as "Laura Francine Templin" (b 26 April 1850/Clarksburg/Ross Co OH and d 7 May 1932 in Atlanta/Pickaway Co., OH) where she married William Nelson Willis (1850-1889) on 6 November 1873 in Ross Co. OH. So this Laura Francine TEMPLIN, who has the right name and the right birthdate is eliminated and cannot be a candidate at all.

C. The 1860 US Census for Salem, Warren Co., OH, identifies "Laura TEMPLIN," age 4, as the daughter of William Templin, 26, and Samantha S. Templin, 24. [Wm. Martin Templin, 1830-1886, and Samantha S. Mills, 1834-1913). However, in the 1870 Census this family has moved to Union Township, Davis Co., Iowa, although Laura is no longer listed as among this family. By the 1880 Census, this family has moved on to Iowa Township, Thayer County, Nebraska, and Laura is again missing from this family. If this Laura TEMPLIN had remained behind in OH when her family moved on--by 1870--to Iowa, and if this Laura were only 4 years old in 1860, she would have been a girl of 16 in the 1870 OH Census, and is a little young and thus unlikely to have been the mother of Lorettia DRAIS, born in September 1870. Further, the Laura DRAICE living on the farm of Isaac & Hannah DRAICE ion Highland County in June of 1870 was listed as being 21 years old. Although Warren County OH is only about 50 miles west of Hillsborough in Highland Co. OH, and although this girl has the right name, her age is not a good fit and she does not seem to be a strong candidate.

D. The 1880 US Census fir Paint Township in Fayette County OH lists a "Laura DRAISE, 34" as the wife of Felix M. DRAISE, 37. This Laura DRAISE was born in VA in 1847 and her maiden name was Laura Virginia WILL. Felix M. DRAISE, her husband, is a cousin of the Isaac Drais who is the father of Commodore P. DRAIS in Highland Co., OH. This Laura DRAISE cannot be the mother of Loretta or the wife of Commodore P. DRAIS and is thus eliminated.

Having done all this spadework, I am still unable to identify the parents of the "Laura F. TEMPLIN" who is cited in Genevieve Breakfield's reference volume, Highland County Births, as being the mother of Loretta or Luettia DRAIS and the probable wife of Commodore P. DRAIS. I can only hope that local records in Highland County can shed more light on the marriage of Laura F. Templin to Commodore P. (Perry?) DRAIS (circa 1869-70) and on the birth of their daughter, Loretta/Luettia DRAIS.

Any help, suggestions, or random acts of genealogical kindness will be greatly appreciated.
