In Reply to: James Dozier, Bute County, N.C. by Louise Woods of 1600

See if this will help you.

JAMES DOZIER was born about 1735 in probably in Richmond Co, VA.

He married MARY MALONE before 1764 since MARY relingist her dower on 20 Nov 1764 (Bute (Warren)Co, NC DB A, p. 40)

In Sept 1764, James bought land in Bute Co., NC from his father JOHN DOZIER. (Warren Co, NC DB A, p. 246)

There were records of JAMES DOZIER in Bute Co, NC until about 1781.

In 1774, JOHN MALONE, father of MARY MALONE DOZIER died and in his will he mentioned his son-in-law JAMES DOZIER. (Warren Co., NC WB A., p. 272)

By 1781 JAMES DOZIER was delingist in paying his taxes in Bute Co., NC (Warren Co., NC Minute Bk 3, p. 116)

JAMES DOZIER'S Aunt & Uncle ELIZABETH DOZIER THORTON and husband MARK THORNTON moved to Wilkes Co., Ga. about 1785 and his sister SARAH DOZIER WEBB and her husband LEONARD WEBB moved about the same time.

JAMES DOZIER recieved a land grant in WILKES CO., GA. abt 1786 (Wilkes Co., Ga. Headwright Bk 17, p. 54)

The Warren Co., GA JAMES DOZIER was NOT JAMES I. DOZIER. James Ingo Dozier moved to TN. Family lore has reported the Wilkes Co., Ga. James Dozier as being a James INGO Dozier, but this information is incorrect. Read the following note from Elizabeth Vaughan, a well known Dozier researcher who lives in VA. Elizabeth is now deceased (2012)

About The Seaborn name:
In James Dozier of Georgia. Bill Edrington , had a genealogist to check all the records that she could and she never found a single place where in legal records
he had the initial S. or the name Seaborn in any of his signatures. And I have never found a record signed by him or any deed, etc with the S. or Seaborn name .If they are using the James S. Dozier Rev. war records
to prove this, these records are for James Smith Dozier of Richmond Co., Va. I had a descendant of James Smith Dozier to write me some years back and said they were her ancestors records and she sent me his line,
etc.I understood that there had been a stop put on anyone using those papers unless they had actual proof. So far I don't think anyone hasused them lately.
Becky who lives in Georgia not far from where the Doziers lived and I discussed this some time ago and I don't think she has ever found a record with proof. Did you Becky? I know the DAR is much stricter now about papers. There have been many stops put on ancestors until legal records have been found.
I just use the name James Dozier of Georgia and his wife Mary Melone when I write or speak about him.

Keep in touch. Elizabeth
