For some time now I have tried to determine the first wife of E.P. Gower. Much family history said it was Mary Ann Dozier with a mar. lic. date of 1855. Many online sources showed it was Mary Ann Simmons with the same date. I finally got a chance to visit Nashville, and have finally found the source of confusion. Thanks to the good work of the staff at the Metropolitan Archives of Nashville and Davidson County. They found the original document which showed that indeed Mary Ann Dozier was the bride in that document. The Simmons name was erronously copied on to the front of that document as the bride, but Ephriam Simmons was shown on the inside as the bondsman with E.P. Gower. So the moral is when confronted with such inconsistencies, go for the original if it can be found. Hopefully all those who have that marriage shown as to Mary Ann Simmons, will correct their online information. But that still leaves me with the dilemma of who were the parents of Mary Ann Dozier? Several doziers in Davidson county, but none show a Mary Ann with the approximate birth date of 1838 that haven't already been shown to have married others. I can't recommend the Metropolitan Archives of Nashville and Davidson County enough, they have a lot of the original early documents of that area. They also are very helpful. I will post a copy of the mar. lic. on the Davidson Co., Page for those who want to examine further. Jerry Notify Administrator about this message?
