Doxey Family Genealogy Forum

Dear Kathie: My family has lived on Long Island since approx. 1650. Thomas Doxey sailed to this country in 1640 on the ship "Little James" from England, and was the captain of a sloop and traded between the settlements of New London,CT, Southold,LI and probably New York among others. His is one of the first two deaths recorded in New London in 1650. His wife remarried and lived in Southold, LI. She sent their small son (Thomas Doxey II) back to England for an education. He returned. The family settled in various towns over the years, including Hewlett and Queens (Flushing). During the Revolutionary War part of the family was loyal to the King of England, and lost much land and wealth when the English retreated. Some members of the family were exiled to Nova Scotia, but many remained on LI. My maiden name is spelled Doxsey, but we are from the same family. My Dad, who doesn't remember too well now and is ill, did much family research and I remember the name William. Other family names from the past are Samuel, Isaac, Sara, Catherine. I now regret that I did not get a copy of his family tree research, but he has promised to give me a copy. It might be interesting for you to check the message from John Palmer, in England. And by the way, Smith is also a Long Island name. Good luck!
