Hi Linda
I have been researching my husband's family history - I live in Staffs, England - and so far I have only come across DORSETT, DORSET, DOREST! and DOSSETT - I think it may depend where the person comes from on how the name is spelt - in this area it is quite common for it to be pronounced DOSSETT - I can imagine that it could change to DOWSETT in other counties eg Somerset - bearing in mind that many of the people that we are trying to trace would not be able to read and write then the name may have been spelt phonetically so I wouldn't rule out a connection
Good luck, Sheila
