My gggg grandfather was sea captain Samuel James Dowsett born in Rochester Kent Eng in 1794. His wife was Mary Bishop born Woolwich
London Eng 1808. He was one of 23 children.
He and Mary married in Australia. They had
family there as well. The captain did shipping business in Australia and was into
whaling. They arrived in Hawaii in 1822
accompaning the ship captain George
Vancouver promised to King Kamehameha.
Samuel and Mary had 4 children, James,
Samuel Henry, Elizabeth Jane and Deborah
Melville. James, was my ggg grandfather
who became a successful entrepreneur in
Hawaii in the shipping, lumber, whaling
and sugar industries. He married my
ggg grandmother Annie Green Ragsdale,
daughter of Alexander Ragsdale of Virginia
and Hawaiian chieftess Kahawalu. If any
one has a connection to my Dowsetts please
let me know. Samuel was lost at sea
hunting for pearls in 1834. James worked
to support his mother and siblings at
age 12. The family since then remains here
in Hawaii and the Dowsett name lives on.
