Joe,
My Downs ancestors came from Clinton County, NY. Some appear to have lived in Vermont prior to coming to Essex County and then up later to Champlain (circa 1803). Other Downs people lived at times across the border near Covey Hill,Quebec. Others lived in Edwards and Gouverneur in St. Lawrence County. So many of the names are similar to those given the children of James and Freedom Rider Downs in Mooers, NY: Charity, Henry, William, Daniel, James, etc. Also, they moved to Barry County, MI, not far from Calhoun County. Supposedly, their origins go to County Down in Ulster. They were definitely Methodist. There is, for example, a John Wesley Downs. My question is this: where did your Downs people come from originally? How did they get to CT? What was their religion?
