Your posting was too much of a coincidence for me to ignore. My name is Elizabeth Downman Clements. I am named for my father who is Downman Clements of Richmond VA. He was named for, but not related to the Downman's. The story goes the Downman's of West Point, VA in King William County were good friends of the Clements also of King William Co, VA. The Reverend John Yates Downman was ordained in 1883. My grandfather, Paul Downman Clements was born Sept. 1884 and they named him after Dr. Downman. Dr. Downman served as rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Richmond VA for 41 years. When he attempted to retire, the congregation and vestry insisted he stay on the capacity of rector emeritus. I had always assumed Downman was a family name and was suprised to find out it was not a blood tie. I have a nice article about Dr. Downman's retirement from a circa 1930's Richmond newspaper if any relatives would like a copy.
