Hello Janice,

Yes, Emanuel Downing did indeed marry Lucy Winthrop the sister of John Winthrop the Governor Of Massachusetts.

Sadly there is much incorrect information in the first 7 paragraphs in the Downing section of the 1914 edition by John W. Jordan. I will attempt to correct some of the mistakes with references.

Paragraph 1. Re. Geoffrey Downing - The arms given to him are incorrect. "Gales a fesse naire, between two lions passant quadrant ermine" these are the arms of Edmund Downing of Waltham Holy Cross, Co. Essex granted to Edmund Downing in 1584.[College of Arms] Crest: "Out of a ducal coronet a swan, or." The use of the words 'ermine' and 'coronet' were not always a link to Royalty. {College of Arms].

Paragraph 2. Re Arthur Downing of Lexham - Arthur married Susan Calybutt of Castle Acre, Norfolk 22 Nov. 1570 at Clare, Suffolk, note 2 miles from Belchamp St. Paul in Essex. [Clare Parish Register FL. 501/4/1]

Paragraph 3. Re Calybut Downing - He died 1644 [His will dated 31 Oct. 1644]. He married 1st Elizabeth Morrison nee Wingfield Dec. 1604, Tinwell Co. Rutland [DE 2271/1 Tinwell, Rutland - Northamptonshire Record Office]. He married 2nd Anne Hogan, but no dates for her birth and marriage have been found.

Paragraph 4. Re Emanuel Downing - He was not the son of Calybut Downing and he was not born in Shennington. He was the son of George Downing a headmaster, school now called 'Ipswich School', Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He was bapt. 12 August 1585 at St. Lawrence Church, Ipswich. [Ipswich Record Office microfilm J426/48 Vol 584 9].

Paragraph 5. Re Henry Downing - To date there is no proof that Henry was the son of Emanuel. I would be most interested to see some. Henry in paragraph 5 was said to be in the Kings Own Guards they are now known as The Grenadier Guards who in 2006 celebrated their 350th year. The regiments archives have been looked at but there is no Henry Downing, but there is a John Downing who in Nov. 1660 was an Ensign and the last listing for him was 8th March 1679 as a Major. ['History of the Grenadier Guards' by Lt. Gen. Sir Frederick Hmilton Vol 1 & 3 pub. 1874 from documents in the State Paper Office, War Office, Horse Guards, Regimental Records].

Paragraph 6. Re Colonel Adam Downing - I would also be interested to see documentation of proof that Adam is the son of Henry. Adam's mother was certainly named Jane in his will. I doubt that Adam Downing ever lived in Downing Street, the buildings began in 1683, by 1689 Adam was at the Seige of Londonderry. [Adam was one of many who signed a letter dated 29th July 1689 sent to William III]. Adam married Ann Jackson daughter of John Jackson of Coleraine not Margaret. [Ann is named in Adam's will as his wife, and her name is engraved on the west side of the Downing vault St. Tida's Church, Bellaghy, Co. Londonderry].

Paragraph 7. Re John Downing - He was not the youngest son of Adam Downing [On the west side of the Downing vault John is described as 'his eldest surviving son']. He married Anne Rowe daughter of Rev. Simon Rowe, not Margaret [Downing vault].

I hope some of the above helps some readers. Jill.
