Hello Jeff,

Here is my information on Calybute Downing junior. Again my spelling is 'Calybute' unless I'm quoting the name from a document and I will rewrite the dates in his life that I wrote in the 'Calybute Downing the father born end of the 1500's' message yesterday dated 21st June 09, and you will also find some of the information repeated from the message yesterday, sorry.

A few dates - *Calybute Downing junior.

*Calybute's bapt. St. Andrew's, Northborough Oct.27th 1605.
[Northamptonshire R.O. - Ref. Longden Transcript Vol.IV.]

*Calybute's marriage Quainton Buckinghamshire Dec.2nd 1627
[Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies, County Hall, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire - Ref. Quainton Parish Records.]

*Calybute's death. There is no exact date given, but on Nov. 2nd 1643 the House of "Lords agreed with the Commons in the nomination of John Durie to succeed the deceased Calibute Downing,...."

Calybute Downing junior was the son of Calybute Downing senior and his 1st wife Elizabeth Morrison nee Wingfield who married in December 1604 at Tinwell, Co. Rutland. Calybute junior was baptised on October 27th 1605 which was just over 45 weeks after his parents wedding day. In the past there has been a dispute as to who was Calybute junior's mother because of the confusing Norfolk Visitations, explained in the message headed 'Calybute Downing the father born end of the 1500's' post date June 21 2009, but with the dates given she was Elizabeth nee Wingfield.

Calybute junior certainly had one sister named Susanna baptised Oct. 8 1609 at Stamford, Northamptonshire, and the Visitation of Norfolk, 1563, 1589, and 1613 names another as Elizabeth. I don't know their mother's name as Calybute senior married a 2nd wife named Ann Hogan who in the Norfolk Visitations had been named as the mother of ALL the children!

In the Norfolk Visitations Ann Hogan's father was named as Edmond Hogan. An Edmund Hogan of Hackney, Middlesex - will dated 1st July 1606 - probate 20th October 1609 [National Archives PROB 11/114]named his daughter as Ann Hogan - "I give and bequeathe to my daughter Ann Hogan six hundred pounds in money......" I don't know for certain that this was the Ann Hogan who married Calybute senior but if she was she was still unmarried in 1606.

The correct dates with primary sources for a] the death and burial place of Elizabeth Downing nee Wingfield, and b] the marriage date and place of Ann Hogan to Calybute Downing have not been found.

Calybute Downing junior's university career is a little confusing as he went to both Cambridge and Oxford. From Ancestry.com - Cambridge University Alumni, 1261 - 1900 he entered Emmanuel College, Cambrige in the Easter of 1623, aged 18. From research undertaken for my great-grandfather, he then moved to Oriel College, Oxford for his B.A. received 20th November 1626 and his M.A. he received from Peterhouse, Cambridge in 1630. Calybute Downing received his LLD in 1637 [LLD Legum Doctor - Doctor of Laws from Chambers English Dictionary].

Calybute junior then became rectors of different parishes before rising to well known heights which are well documented on the internet, but my interest is in him and his family.

On December 2nd 1627 at Quainton, Buckinghamshire Calybute junior married Margaret Brett daughter of Richard Brett, D.D. According to the 'Dictionary of National Biography' edited by Leslie Stephen Richard Brett was the rector and Calybute the curate. Three of Calybute's children were baptised between the years of 1628 and 1631, but the family moved to Ickford, Buckinghamshire as Calybute Downing junior signed the register as Rector of Ickford at the end of 1634 and 1 daughter was baptised there in 1633.
There was another daughter who was baptised back in Quainton in June 1636, but that does not mean Calybute and family had returned there, but his father-in-law the Quainton Rector did die in April 1637, so may be he did. [All baptism parish records from the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies plus Calybute's wedding and Ann Downing nee Hogan's death - 10th Dec. 1630].

Calybute Downing junior had moved to Hackney by 1640 because his son Henry was baptised at St. John's November 14th 1640 [London Metropolitan Archives] also from the National Archives: House of Lords - Journal Office[HL/PO/JO/10/1/1/-HL/PO/JO/10/1/119]quote - "18th Dec. 1640 - Petition of Calibute Downing, pastor of the church of Hackney, that he may be instituted to the living of Hackney, the church being now void in law, in consequence of George Moore the present parson having taken another great benefice."

As I explained at the beginning of this message Calybute junior died sometime before November 2nd 1643, I don't know when his wife Margaret died, but from the marriages of St John's Hackney certainly 2 and possibly 3 of his daughters stayed in Hackney until they married. As yet I have not found the 4th daughter Jane or Henry the son. The 1st son bapt. Oct. 3rd 1628 Quainton, a third Calybute, died a child.

The four daughters, Elizabeth b. May 9th 1630, Anne b. March 4th 1631, Margaret b. Jan. 20th 1633, Jane b. June 24th 1636 and son Henry b. Nov. 14th 1640, are named in the 1644 will of their grandfather, Calybute Downing of Shenington, Co. Gloucestershire.

That is all I have found out about the Calybute's and their families so I hope some of it helps, and hopefully some of the gaps can be filled in by readers of the board.
Jill.
