Hello Jeff, As you can see I changed the heading to move away from the original, but this is in answer to your email dated May 27th 09 re the Calybute's, father and son. My spelling is 'Calybute' unless I'm quoting the names from a document. This first email will cover mainly Calybute Downing senior. A few dates - *Calybute Downing senior. *Calybute's birth date has not been proved. *Calybute's 1st marriage Dec. 13th or 15th 1604. [Northamptonshire Record Office DE2271/1 Tinwell, Rutland] *Calybute's will Oct. 31st 1644. Probate Dec. 15th 1644. [National Archives Wills Ref.PROB 11/192] A few dates - *Calybute Downing junior. *Calybute's bapt. St. Andrew's, Northborough Oct.27th 1605. [Northamptonshire R.O. - Ref. Longden Transcript Vol.IV.] *Calybute's marriage Quainton Buckinghamshire Dec.2nd 1627 [Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies, County Hall, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire - Ref. Quainton Parish Records.] *Calybute's death. There is no exact date given, but on Nov. 2nd 1643 the House of "Lords agreed with the Commons in the nomination of John Durie to succeed the deceased Calibute Downing,..." ['The Life of John Milton Vol.3 1643-1649'by David Masson] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Calybute Downing senior is said to be the son of Arthur Downing of Lexham, Norfolk and his wife Susan nee Calybute aged 17 [Married at Clare, Suffolk Nov. 22nd 1570 Ref. Parish Reg. Ref. FL.501/4/1 - Ipswich Record Office] daughter and one of the heirs of John Calybute of Castle Acre. Many birth dates have been put forward but none have a primary source. Calybute is named as their son because of the following a]Susan's maiden name. b]The book Muskett Vol. 1 in which the Calybute's, father and son, are linked to the arms of Arthur Downing c]The Visitations of Norfolk, 1563, 1589, and 1613. Published by the Harleian Society in London in 1891. Which can be found on line. So everything links Calybute to Arthur, which I really hope is so, but there is a problem with the Visitations of Norfolk and the years 1563, 1589, and 1613, I call them the '3 in 1', which throws a little doubt on the link. I will break down the years. In 1563 Arthur and Susan were not married so no children or grandchildren. In 1589 they had been married for 19 years and they would have had some children by then. In 1613 Arthur and Susan's grandchildren would have been born. The linking of the three years together has caused muddles, here is the problem - This particular Downing family, [Jeffery - Arthur - children], is noted in the original Heralds Norfolk Visitations book for the year 1589 which Arthur signed and his children are named as "John son and heir, Dorothy, Anne and Susan" - there is no Calybute named. I saw the book in November 2008. But there could be a reason for Calybute's absence in the year 1589. Susan nee Calybute was 17 years old at her marriage according to G.A. Carthew, Esq., F.S.A. - quote "She was the wife of Downing when the P.M.I. was taken on the death of her father, 16 Jan., 12 Eliz., and was then aged 17 years.-G.A.C." [I think P.M.I. may be I.P.M.]. 12 Eliz., means Queen Elizabeth had ruled for 12 years so the date was 1570 Susan's wedding year, so in 1589 Susan would have been 36 and still been able to have children. If Calybute was born to Arthur and Susan he would have had to have been born soon after the Visitations in 1589 because in Dec 1604 he married Elizabeth Morrison [widow] nee Wingfield, related to Susan by marriage, and Elizabeth had an 18 year old daughter named Frances, who was on the same page of the Tinwell, Rutland marriage register as her mother and Calybute! Calybute could have been only about 15 at the time of the marriage if he was Arthur's son. Maybe the marriage was conducted because Elizabeth was a widow. Information would be welcomed. At St. Andrew's Northborough, Northamptonshire on October 27th 1605 45 weeks after the marriage in December 1604 their son Calybute [junior] was bapt. There is a school of thought that Elizabeth nee Wingfield never gave Calybute [senior] a child and the mother of Calybute and all Calybute senior's children was his 2nd wife Ann Hogan, as shown in the 3 in 1 Norfolk Visitations. With the best will in the world the timing just does not work. The only other child of Calybute senior I have discovered is "Susanna the daughter of Calybute Downinge gent ---8th Oct. 1609". Ref. Stamford Baron parish baptisms, document reference - 296P/28 Northamptonshire Record Office. I have no idea which wife is her mother. Stamford is 1.6 miles from Tinwell and about 8 to 9 miles from Northborough. I am looking for certain dates with places and with primary sources - The death date and place of Elizabeth Morrision [widow] nee Wingfield Downing. The marriage place and date of Calybute Downing and Ann Hogan his 2nd wife. Ann Hogan was buried the 10th December 1630 at Quainton, Buckinghamshire. The burial place of both the Calybutes. Also the proof that Calybute senior was the son of Arthur of Lexham and Susan nee Calybute. I hope someone will be able to throw some light on this. Jill. P.S. Jeff did you receive anything yesterday? Tomorrow I will send a message about Calybute junior. Notify Administrator about this message?
