This portrait of Andrew Jackson Downing appears as a frontpiece to the Nov issue of The Horticulturist and Journal of Rural Art and Rural Taste, vol.VII, 1852. There is a biographical sketch of him on pages 491-500. Downing was an author and editor of horticultural literature. He was born in Newburgh, NY on 31 Oct 1815. He died in a fire on board the steamer Henry Clay in the Hudson river 28 July 1852.
