John Downing was born 1 Feb 1766 in Andover, MA, married Ruth Emery 14 Nov 1788 in New Gloucester, ME, and died in Auburn, ME (formerly a part of Minot)12 Seept 1852. I am descended from his son John, Jr.
You are correct, Ruth Enery's parents were Moses Emery and Ruth Bodwell.Moses was born 11 Feb 1741 in Newbury, MA, and died 28 Apr 1826 in Minot, ME, where he was the first inhabitant. Ruth Bodwell was born 13 Jan 1749/50 in Methuen, MA and died 28 Nov 1831 in Minot. They had Ruth, born 29 May 1769, who died in Monmouth, ME 26 Oct 1864. There were several other children incluing a Moses Jr and a John, but I do not have any data on them.
John was the son of Samuel Downing and Abigail Barnard, both of Andover, MA. He was born 2 May 1742, married Abigail 22 Mar 1764, and died 1 Dec 1812 in Auburn, ME
Abigail was the daughter of John Barnard and Alice Holt, and was born about 1700 and died in Andover, MA 22 Nov 1762.
Samuel was the son of Capt Richard Downing and Temperance Derby. Richard was born in 1716 in Salem, MA, married 24 Aug 1738, and died in Andover, MA 29 Oct 1793. Temperance Derby was the daughter of Samuel Derby and Hannah Young, and was born in July 1716 in Salem, and died in Andover 13 Oct 1779. in Andover.,
Richard Downing Jr was the son of Richard Downing, Sr,who was born about 1694, but birthplace unknown. He was the ward of Thomas Downing and Mary Chadwell of Salem, so presumably his parents were deceased before 1701-2 when Thomas died. He married his backdoor neighbor, Anstiss Palfrey 15 mar 1712 and died in Andover in 1745. Anstiss was the daughter of Walter and Margaret Manning Palfrey, and was born 7 Jan 1681 (?) (or 1691) in Salem, and died in Andover 1726.
I have Olive Downing born 9 Dec 1793 in Minot (later Auburn, ME), and married to Joseph Strout on 28 May 1817 there, but have no furhter info about this fsmily.
