Renatus Downing and Cornwall

I want to share some thoughts on the possible relation between Renatus Downing c. 1810 of South Carolina, and the Renatus Downing of St. Just, Cornwall, 1658.

I think a relationship between the two is possible, but how likely? For one, most Cornish immigrants came over during the mid to late 1800s, and two, many of them flocked to mining professions in the North and Northeast. My particular line was a farming family. Now, Renatus is not a common name either, but at that time people were certainly using Latin names for their children. One can find the name Renatus being used all over in the early United States with other families.

The Renatus of Cornwall could possibly be related to Renatus of South Carolina, but the divide in years and migration patterns of early settlers suggests that it may just be a coincidence. Then again, I have no substantial proof to this finding, only speculation!!
