MATTHEW DOWNING, ENGLAND CIRCA 1700

I believe I am a descendant of Matthew Downing who fathered a son around 1710 by Anne Paine of Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire, England, which was the seat of the Downing family.

The son, known as William Paine had the 4th Baronet, Jacob Downing circa 1717-1764 as benefactor and is said in Paine family records to have been 'put into a farm' by Sir Jacob.
This suggests that Matthew was a sufficiently close relative for Sir Jacob to feel the need to deal with William as a matter of family responsibility and honour.

I have a lot of details of the family tree of William Paine with several branches down to the present day. I also have information on Jacob and his predecessors, most of which is well documented on the internet.

In order to link all this together I am seeking information on Matthew, whose actual relationship to Sir Jacob I do not know.

Can anyone help please?

Mark Homan
England.
