Hi, Craig. I'm a Downie too and have a large database of Downies including many seemingly unrelated branches, so would be glad to share information with you. I'm working on the origin of the name and the earliest references to it at the moment. I'm not sure about John's connections with Ulster as I have him as the son of Robert Downie and Barbara Paterson (birth not in IGI online but Blantyre is one of many parishes in Scotland with no male births or baptisms in the online index - it does appear on the Scotlandspeople index). According to the 1851 Census, Robert was born in about 1806 in Blantyre, I believe to John Downie and Anne Mackie. John died in 1861 in Blantyre aged 81 according to Scotlandspeople and his mother's surname is given as Pollock. The death certificate ought to give the father's name. I'm a bit sceptical about the worth of DNA testing and my understanding is that the tests are relatively expensive but don't let me put you off ... I've followed many branches back as far as I can and have not found any connection between any of them. My favourite theory right now is that the name is geographical in origin (small hill) and was taken up by people who lived on or near small hills. However, there is some evidence of a connection with the Lindsays and I wear a Lindsay tartan kilt without a huge amount of conviction, based on my great grandmother's belief in this connection - she was born in 1862. Have a look at my website: http://www.downieabz.org.uk and give me an email - this applies to anyone else with similar interests. Ian Downie, Aberdeen Notify Administrator about this message?
