John Downie, Lanarkshire, b.1846

John Downie was a 'joiner' in Blantyre, Lanarkshire and lived until 1911. He married Elizabeth Sorbie, in Stonehouse, Lanarkshire on Sept 1st 1869. I'm trying to find solid evidence of John's family having come(back to Scotland) from Ulster, probably in the early years of the 19th century. Any input or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
I am also interested in the very early, long, long gone Downies in general and would like to hear from anyone sharing similar research interests --archaeology, surname, placename and early written evidence. Much can be recovered about our distant as well as our more recent kin. DNA analysis for genealogical purposes is inexpensive and available to the general public nowadays. We should sign up and swab en masse. We would soon see some patterns and maybe even unknown relatives emerge way up in the branches while adding a bit more character and clarity to the entire Downie tree. All the best and thanks in advance.
