Hi I have a Peter Coats Downie b 1850, in my family tree, as you say in your message he was brought up by Peter & Hannah Coats, but wat puzzles me is how do they fit in with Peter. They are described as his grandparents in a couple of the census, but i believe His parents to be William Downie & Mary Ann Carter. It seems Mary Ann Carter died quite young leaving her eldest daughter Mary Ann Downie to bring up the children, while her father, William, was away at sea. Peter & Hannah actually lived next door to William & Mary Ann Downie, and this is where Peter resided. So if Peter Downie was the son of William & Mary Ann Carter surely his grandparents would have been A Carter or Downie??? I know this is a long shot getting through to you as the original message is nearly a year old Any reply would be apprieciated to clear up this enigma Mark Downie Notify Administrator about this message?
