Obituary of Thomas Bell Downie, 1865 – 1929
Transcribed July 2004 from the North Judson (Indiana) News, Sept. 12, 1929

Surnames: Downie, Gilmore, Lantz, Parks, Walton

Thomas Bell Downie was born in Woodford County, Illinois, near Secor, on November 2, 1865, the second son of Alexander Downie and Catharine Parks Downie. He passed to the great beyond at the home of his sister, Elizabeth Downie (Mrs. James O.) Gilmore near North Judson, Indiana on September 3, 1929 at the age of 63 years, 10 months, and 1 day.

In 1875, at the age of 10 years, Mr. Downie moved with his parents from the old home in Woodford County to Iroquois County, Illinois, where he grew to manhood.

In 1898, he became a member of the Modern Woodsmen of America and was a member in good standing of the Mt. Ayr, Iowa camp at the time of his death.

About 1902 after 27 years in Iroquois County, he moved to Starke County, Indiana. On October 16, 1911, he was united in marriage to Miss Neva Mae Walton of Hebron, Indiana. To this union were born four daughters.

In 1918, he moved to Lusk, Wyoming, where he resided until about August 1929, when he was brought to the home of his sister, Elizabeth Downie Gilmore some three weeks before his death.

He is survived by his wife, Neva Mae Walton Downie, and four daughters: Bell Marie of Shadron, Wyoming; Pansy Pearl, Helen Elizabeth, and Beulah Luella, all of Hebron, Indiana. Other survivors include two brothers and two sisters: Elizabeth Downie (Mrs. James O.) Gilmore of North Judson, Indiana and Rosanna J. Downie (Mrs. Abraham) Lantz of Grayslake, Illinois; Dr. Charles Downie of North Judson, Indiana, and Everal S. Downie of Mt. Ayr, Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday afternoon at 2:00 at the Eatinger Chapel with the Rev. H.L. McBride officiating. Interment was made in the San Pierre cemetery.

Those from out-of-town who attended the funeral were Arthur Geddes, Mrs. Goldie Breeding and family and Mrs. Jennie Wood of Milford, Illinois; Mrs. Neva Walton Downie and family of Hebron; Andrew Brown of Crown Point; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Rupel, Mr. and Mrs. George Harrison and daughter and Arnold Gilmore of Niles, Michigan, and Everal S. Downie of Mt. Ayr, Iowa.
