I read with interest your note re Peter and Samuel Downey and Anne Cook. I have received from three sources, the same information on one Peter Downey’s family, with same names as you mentioned but different dates and details. I make no claim to having found this information but have researched and verified much of it, and will relate what I have:
*PETER DOWNEY b. ca 1730-34, m. Margaret Aston ca 1754, d. 1803 Surry Co., NC. He was a soldier in the Patriot Service during the Revolutionary War and received pay for such service. His children included William Aston Downey b. 5 July 1755, m. Elizabeth Russell, d. 8 August 1832 Warren Co., KY (William also was Revolutionary War soldier); Abraham Downey b. ca 1760, m. Mary _____, d. ca 1830 Warren Co., KY; Margaret Downey m. William Russell Jr. (brother of Elizabeth); James Downey b. ca 1760-70, m. Mildred _____; *SAMUEL DOWNEY b. ca 1765, m. ANNA COOK (b. ca 1755) 5 April 1786 Surry Co., NC, *PETER DOWNEY bondsman.
James and Samuel were administrators of their father Peter’s will in1803. It is presumed that Peyton Cook, who posted bond for the Downey sons’ administration, was Anna’s brother.

It is said that *SAMUEL died in South Carolina when his children were young (early 1800’s). Their children included **PETER DOWNEY b. 22 Nov. 1788 Surry Co., NC, m. Sarah Olds, d. 27 Sept. 1867 Jefferson Co., AL; Mary (Polly) Downey b. 11 Nov. 1786 Surry Co., NC, m. Robert Hughes, d. 10 Dec. 1872 Jefferson Co., AL; Margaret Downey b. ca 1789, m. Ambrose Vandiver, d. 1860’s Jefferson Co., AL; Peyton S. **(SAMUEL) Downey b. ca 1790-1800 Abbeville Dist. SC; is listed in 1840 census of Monroe Co., AL; CALVIN DOWNEY (my gr/gr/grandfather) b. 1793 NC, m. Pheby Anderson ca. 1813-14, d. 1854 Marengo Co., AL. Calvin’s children: Reuben, Peyton, John, Samuel G., STEPHEN (my gr/grandfather, b. 1830, d.during Civil War), Elizabeth, Polly, Pheby Ann, and Sarah.

One John Cook Downey is listed as another son of Samuel and Anna; however he was b. 1810 – 22 years after their oldest son, when Anna would have been about 55years old. Not impossible, but I believe that John Cook is a grandson of Samuel and Anna – a child of their son Peyton S. (Samuel). This, however, needs to be confirmed or disproved by further research.

I have done extensive research on my ancestral line off and on during the past 20 years and have much information I have been trying to put together as a biographical account to send to libraries, etc. for others to share. Have traveled to MS, AL, the Carolinas, VA, and the DAR library and National Archives in Washington D.C., but I didn’t find a marriage record for Peter Downey or for Samuel Downey and Anna Cook. I would very much like to learn the exact wording on the marriage certificate you mentioned, because there seems to be a discrepancy and to this point I have taken the information I related to you to be factual. Perhaps it is not totally correct; however I did learn of one Downey descendant who was able to become a member of the DAR with that information.
I have yet to find any indication of where the Downeys came from for sure, although my father always said he was an Irishman. Our daughter was in contact with a person in Ireland via the Internet who checked on the Downey name for her. He said the Downeys in Ireland were mostly in the north, which was/is Protestant, and to include a check on the spelling "Macildowney" and "McDowney" as so many names were shortened when immigrants arrived in America.
I look forward to your reply after you have a chance to absorb the above.

Jeanie (Downey) Oakley
