James Downey showed up in Litchfield, CT about 1740. He married Rachel Baker about 1760 or so. They had 12 children. This is the order in which they were born: James Jr.; William; Charles; unknown child; Thomas (Thomas is the only one for whom a birth is actually found to be recorded: born May 17, 1771 in Litchfield, CT); Titus; Robert; John; another unknown child; Lucy; Lysander; and another unknown child. The father, James Downey, who was born about 1740, had a father named James as well. Nothing is known about him except that he suddenly showed up in Litchfield CT and was skilled in the iron forge.
