Barbara Ann Downey, b Dec 10, 1936 District 1901, Los Angeles, CA

This query is being conducted by Barbara Ann Downey's son Mark Zeller. Per documents Mark has in his possession, she was born December 10, 1936 in district #1901, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co, CA. Because she was adopted (apparently twice) Mark has no idea who her birth parents were.

Adoption papers from 1940 (4 years after her birth) list her as a minor residing in Jackson Co, MO and under the guardianship of Richard B. Kirwan. The couple trying to re adopt her were Joseph W. Downey and Margaret C. Downey.

Mark Zeller says "Joe & Margaret Downey were related to a nun named Sister Ann Raymond (SAR) who was living in California at the time of my mother's birth. This nun worked with Bing Crosby doing fund-raising campaigns for hospitals. I think SAR arranged for both of my mother's adoptions". Her birth name was Barbara Jean Russell.

Joe & Margaret Downey changed Barbara Jean Russell's name to Barbara Ann Downey, after that point she was known as Barbara Ann Downey. They also adopted a boy, a non-biological brother of Barbara, who became an architect in Seattle, but died in a climbing accident on Mount Rainier.

Mark says his mother died when he was approx. four years old. Mark was born in 1960, thus Barbara Ann Downey Zeller aka Barbara Jean Russell passed away in 1964-65, in the Kansas City area.

We can't ask Joe & Margaret Downey as they were aged 39-40 when they adopted Barbara Jean Russell and are now gone.

Omer Zeller put the three children he had with Barbara Jean Russell/Barbara Ann Downey into an orphanage after her passing until his remarriage, at which point he reclaimed all the children and had approx. seven more children with his second wife.

Please direct correspondence to Mark Zeller (markjzeller@yahoo.com).

Thank you very much for any info. With the passing of his father, Mark would like to discover where he came from on his mother's side.
