William Downey and his brothers Daniel and James were born in King Street, South Shields. They were originally boat-builders, but later turned to photography. Their Shields premises adjoined St Hilda's church in the Market Place, and by 1863 they were also in Newcastle at 9 Eldon Square. Their first royal order was for pictures of the Hartley mine, the shaft and the rescue team two weeks after the great disaster of 1862 in which 218 men and boys perished. Queen Victoria was greatly moved by these remarkable photographs. They became Photographers in Ordinary to Her Majesty by royal warrant in 1879. The Downey firm shot the first moving picture film of a British monarch in 1896, featuring Queen Victoria with her guests including the Tsar and Tsarina of Russia. i 1 William 1829-1915 married Carolin Griffiths 1821-1874 they had 2 sons William Edward 1855-1908 & Robert I 1856 died as infant. in 1877 William married Lucy Lyon b.1844 d? they had son Arthur James Hope b.1878.d? & daughter Louisa Evelyn b.1879 d? 2 William E.1855-1908 M.
