Downey Family Genealogy Forum

Hi Mary Ellen,
I just started on my Downey/Downie portion of my family tree. There were oodles, Johns that came to Canada from Ireland and settled first in ONTARIO. I'm particulairly tracing the variety of John as I believe my Great-great Grandmother who was Bridget (Downey) O'Shaughnessy had a father and brother of that name. My Downey's are all Roman Catholics....were yours ? There were several other "John's" Church of England and a couple other denominations in Ontario and within the same age brackets. It's always easier to search lineages knowing the correct religion. I believe my Downeys O'Shaughnesy's were from County Kerry also but 100 almost your Grandad b 1867 in "Ireland" won't be a match for these. I'm looking at dates 1779 - 1869. My John Downey was 94-96 when he died in Ontario. Do you know for sure that he was BORN in Ireland? If he indeed from Ireland that recently you shouldn't have a problem finding help in County Kerry. Go to Irish Genealogical Society or County Kerry website and make enquiries. My problem is that the time era I'm looking in doesn't seem to have as many church records available for whatever reason. Good luck with your search
